The 4 Qualities that make Bill Belichick the Greatest Coach Of All-Time
A few months ago, former New England Patriots assistant to the coaching staff Michael Lombardi joined my Project X show to discuss his book Gridiron Genius; which I cannot endorse enough if you're looking to become the smartest football fan around.
We got to discussing the Patriots, and particularly Bill Belichick. He taught me about the platform he created to separate the good and bad coaches from the great coaches.
Excellence in these four areas define a great coach:
1. Command of the room - the coach can control the room and the players respect him/her enough to listen to his plan.
2. Command of the message - their plan can be easily explained and interpreted and everyone is on the same page.
3. Command of trust - everyone in the organization trusts the coach to be consistent.
4. Command of self - the coach will be critical of him/herself when they make a mistake.
A good coach needs to excel at 3 of those 4 categories. A great coach excels in all 4. Belichick is a great coach.
When Lombardi made head coach recommendations for the then-St. Louis Rams in 1996, he told their ownership to either hire Bill Belichick or Nick Saban as their next head coach.
Imagine how history would have unfolded had they listened.
Congrats to Coach Belichick on Super Bowl #6. The Brady and Belichick combination has been unlike anything I've seen.
